Is it safe for a child to drink herbal teas?

In general, children under 6 years old should not be given herbal teas on a regular basis. If a parent chooses to have their child drink herbal tea, a weak brew should be made and the child should be monitored to ensure that he/she does not react adversely to the tea.

Are herbal teas safe to take with prescription medicines?

Some herbal teas may interact with conventional medications therefore, advise your physician of herbal teas that you drink when given medication. You may also conduct your own research on the composition of herbal teas and their possible side effects before deciding whether it is safe to drink a particular herbal tea.

Are all brands of herbal teas the same?

A variety of herbal teas are made by different organizations and their labels may not be standardized. It would therefore be difficult to distinguish good herbs from bad herbs or those that are properly or improperly handled for human consumption. To protect yourself, read the product label, ensure that the product has not expired and try to determine if the product was manufactured by a reputable company that is following good manufacturing practices.

Who can I ask for advice about herbal teas?

Herbal Practitioners, Complementary and Alternative Practitioners, Nutritionists, Pharmacists, Botanists, Medical Doctors, Nutraceutical Manufacturers and Processors, Food Health Stores, Universities, Plant Nurseries and Farm and Garden Stores are all potential sources of information about herbs and spices and their benefits and weaknesses.

What do I do if I have a bad reaction to a particular herbal tea?

Discontinue use of the tea and advise your physician. In addition, advise the manufacturer of the tea because they need to know whether your problem is due to contamination of the tea product or an allergic reaction. Either may require an adjustment to the manufacturing process.

Is it safe to drink different types of herbal teas within one day?

Yes, however each person has a different constitution and must know his or her limitations and history of allergic reactions.

Are any chemicals used in the manufacture of herbal teas?

Perishables Jamaica Ltd (Tops and Sipacupa Ital Jamaican) products are all natural products.

Is it safe to drink herbal teas during pregnancy?

It depends on the tea and quantity being consumed. Check product labels and product information before using certain teas while pregnant. We would also recommend that a pregnant woman check with her personal physician before consuming any herbal teas. Guinea Hen Weed and Neem Tea should not be consumed if pregnant.

What exactly are herbs and spices?

Herbs are aromatic plants, utilized fresh or dried and have medicinal value. Spices are aromatic or pungent vegetable substances or roots used to flavour food or make hot beverages for medical disorders or refreshment

Herbal tea labels include the scientific name of the herb/spice. Is it important?

The scientific or Latin name of a herb/spice helps to differentiate between various species of a particular plant or various types of plants. This helps to prevent confusion.

Are there persons who should be cautious about consuming herbal teas?

Yes. Persons who are pregnant, young children, the elderly and persons with certain medical conditions or who are taking medication should all consult their physician before drinking herbal teas to ensure they do not have an adverse reaction to certain teas.
